Jessie Bowhill read Law at Bristol University and then completed the Bar Vocational Course under the Prince of Wales Scholarship from Gray's Inn. She was called to the Bar in 2003.
Practice: Jessie's practice covers all areas of intellectual property and related fields, including patents, trade marks, copyright, registered and unregistered design rights, passing off, confidential information, IP related contractual disputes, and media/entertainment. In its review of the IP bar Legal Week described Jessie as an "up and coming junior junior" who is "already regarded as absolutely first rate - she may be young but her work has been very impressive".
Recent trials include:
Fisher v. Brooker. A two day appeal about ownership of the musical copyright in the famous song "A Whiter Shade of Pale", as originally recorded by the band "Procol Harem" in 1967. The appeal concerned the equitable doctrines of estoppel, acquiescence, laches, and raised questions under Article 6 European Convention on Human Rights.
Cinpres v. Melea. A two day appeal in a case concerning entitlement to a patent for gas assisted plastic injection moulding, which arose out of previous litigation in the early 1990s. A complex case involving issues such as res judicata, limitation, breach of confidence, fraud and perjury.
Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited v. Warner Lambert Company. A two week patent infringement trial before the Irish High Court concerning the pharmaceutical patent relating to Lipitor, the world's largest selling pharmaceutical.
Other recent trials include a significant and fully fought damages inquiry for patent infringement (having appeared for the successful Claimant at trial and in the Court of Appeal) and a trade mark infringement and passing off trial that concerned the well known Magic Tree air freshener.
Jessie has acted in several disputes relating to television formats, most notably for Simon Cowell in the Pop Idol/X-Factor litigation which settled on the eve of trial. Jessie also represents publishers in connection with magazine formats and related claims, and appeared for the Defendant in IPC v. Highbury House [2005] FSR 20, led by James Mellor.
Jessie regularly acts in cases concerning IP related contractual disputes. As an example, she acted for Tiger Telematics in a dispute with Eddie Jordan over a sponsorship agreement with the Jordan Formula One team. She also has experience of appearing in the Patent Office and Trade Marks Registry.
