Robert Onslow
Robert Onslow has developed a niche practice in cases involving computer software and data, having acted as junior in three out of the four recent leading copyright cases in that field: Cantor Fitzgerald v Tradition, Nova v Mazooma and SAS Institute v World Programming. His technical ability and commercial approach in these cases is very highly regarded, and due in part to his first hand commercial experience running a successful software company. However he is also known for his very approachable manner in handling instructions in patent, trade mark and designs cases from firms of all sizes and experience. Robert accepts public access and licensed access instructions, assisting with early stages advisory work as well as large-scale court litigation. He is highly-ranked in both Chambers and the Legal 500 for IT/IP work.
Data Protection and E-Commerce
Data protection and e-commerce are rapidly establishing themselves as areas requiring dedicated specialist advice, especially since international data protection regulations are so often in conflict. Robert’s strong technical background, as well as his specialist IP knowledge and commercial experience, means he is well-placed to handle complex disputes in this area. Recent examples of his data protection work, much of which has an international flavour, include advising banks and shipping companies on the export of data to legal and quasi-legal institutions in the US such as the Securities Exchange Commission.
