Pupillage

8 New Square offers one 12 month pupillage annually with an award of £30,000. This sum is made up of a pupillage award of £15,000 during the 1st six months and an earnings guarantee of £15,000 during the 2nd six months.

Much of the work of chambers is technical in nature and for this reason we only take pupils who have demonstrated an aptitude for and interest in this sort of work. Most members of chambers and pupils have a science qualification to degree level or higher, but this is not mandatory: many successful intellectual property practitioners and judges studied other subjects. However, applicants without a science degree will have to demonstrate in some other way that they have the ability and confidence to cope with technical/scientific subject matter.

Pupillage is structured as set out in our pupillage policy (see box below). Generally pupils will sit with one member of chambers for a three month period then move to a new pupil master/mistress for a further 3 month period. There is facility to move to other members of chambers who have particularly interesting cases.

Our current pupil is Robert Smith. Robert has a PhD in electron wavepacket dynamics and an MSc First Class in Chemistry from Kings College, London. Robert is currently sitting with Michael Tappin.

We are delighted to annouce that Isabel Jamal has accepted pupillage commencing October 2008. Izzie gained a First Class degree in Physics and Philosophy at St. Hilda's College , Oxford

Mini Pupillage

We offer up to 40 mini-pupillages a year. Mini pupillages are usually of 2 days duration and are designed to give applicants an idea of the work undertaken by chambers and a feel for the atmosphere within 8 New Square. Due to the scientific nature of the work undertaken in chambers we ask that anyone applying for a mini-pupillage is able to demonstrate a technical or scientific background, either academically or through other experience. We actively encourage anyone considering full pupillage to apply for a mini pupillage. Applications should be addressed to Ben Newham with a covering letter and CV.
